NYC Health + Hospitals / Jacobi Emergency Medicine, The Bronx

Emergency medicine residency · NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi · Bronx, New York

A new program. The old guard. Generations of spirit.

Jacobi started training emergency physicians in 1975 — the training site of the first EM residency in New York City. In 2027 the program stands on its own again, with the same faculty, the same trauma bays, and fifty years of excellence behind it.

The department the program is built on.

Jacobi is a public hospital in the North Bronx and an ACS-designated Level I adult, Level II pediatric trauma center. It is also the regional hyperbaric center and the regional snakebite center for the tri-state area, with a burn service, a designated stroke center, toxicology, and one of only two on-campus helipads in the five boroughs sitting steps from the resuscitation bay.

What that means for a resident is uncomplicated: high volume, high acuity, and undifferentiated illness from the first shift. Residents here care for one of the most medically underserved populations in the city, and they finish knowing how to run a room.

The people teaching the incoming class are the same people who have been training classes for literal decades — “New,” but also “Tried and true.”

Safety net Emergency Medicine meets the cutting edge care our community deserves and the support our community needs.

Fellowships in house

Ultrasound, simulation and education, clinical research with an optional one-year MPH, and a longitudinal healthcare administration track.

Resuscitative TEE

Transesophageal echo used during active resuscitation to guide compressions and find reversible causes of arrest, run by dedicated ultrasound faculty.

Whole blood at the bedside

Refrigerators in the trauma bays, so the product is in the room before the patient needs it rather than after.

Point-of-care ultrasound

More than 50,000 studies a year. POCUS is taught as a core skill from PGY-1, not as an elective a resident opts into late.

Simulation at IMSAL

High-fidelity work at the Institute for Medical Simulation and Advanced Learning, plus in-situ sims run live in the department's own resuscitation bays.

In-house toxicology

Medical toxicologists on the faculty and in the building. Poisonings, overdoses, and withdrawal are managed with a toxicologist at the bedside rather than at the other end of a phone line.

Hyperbaric medicine

The regional hyperbaric center — carbon monoxide poisoning, decompression illness, and necrotizing soft tissue infection treated on site.

Snakebite and envenomation

The regional snakebite treatment center for the tri-state area. Envenomations are referred here from well outside the borough.

Burn care

A burn service in the hospital, so burn resuscitation is something residents perform and follow rather than package and transfer.

Social Emergency Medicine

The emergency department is where housing instability, food insecurity, violence, and gaps in access surface first. Screening and referral are built into the visit rather than left to chance.

Reproductive health

Early pregnancy evaluation, contraception access, and options counseling handled in the department, with first-trimester ultrasound taught as part of the core scanning curriculum.

Global ultrasound outreach

Faculty travel to Jamaica each January for a two-day seminar with the JAHJAH Foundation, teaching emergency ultrasound to physicians from public hospitals across the island.
